Cartoon Wars

Platforms: iPhone
Genre(s): Tower Defense
Publisher(s): BLUE GNC
Developer: Blue GNC

The iPhone is known to be strong for its Tower Defense games, which are stripped down, quick Real Time Strategy games, but now there’s a new trend, some developers have stripped down Tower Defense games. While Blue may not be the originator of this trend, they have developed one with the name Cartoon Wars.

As I have explained before, Tower defense games consist of a playing field where you lay out towers that stop enemy troops from reaching your base, either by carving a path of offense towers, or covering a predetermined path. Cartoon Wars does thing a little bit differently. For one, you play on a horizontal path rather than the usual bird’s eye view, you don’t only defend your tower from the growing waves of enemies, but also attack your enemies’ tower.

There is a certain inconsistency in this game’s presentation, I wont judge the game for it’s lifeless menu or the font they decided to use in this game, this is a $0.99 game after all. My main complaint however is the ugliness of the unit’s design, don’t get me wrong, I love stick figures, they make amusing victims of violence. but the monsters look like generic creatures out of several very early versions of game and rpg makers, not only do they look generic but they look like they’re made out of several different art styles, not like they look good anyway. If you’re a bit of a grammar/spelling nazi, you will get turned off at the few english errors here and there.

The game is pretty basic in terms of gameplay, you earn gold (to upgrade your tower and units and unlock more unit types) and mana (to summon more units to attack your opponents) for killing enemy units, and even more for destroying your opponent’s tower. The upgrading and building part of this game does make it a bit engaging, but the game however lacks much depth as the stronger units are either just faster or have longer range attacks than their predessors, eventually at one point of the game the older unit types become pretty much useless.

An interesting addition to the genre though is the crossbow on the top of your tower, it’s upgradeable and you can use it to attack and preserve your mana points to summon some of the more higher costing units, it does add a little more depth to a depth lacking game.

I can’t complain much about the game, it is only worth a dollar, and I play it pretty much whenever I’m just sitting there listening to podcasts.

What we think: if you’ve played all the tower defense games (including the free ones) and desperate for a new one, get this if you’re tolerant to it’s brutal simplicity. But if you really want to get into the Tower Defense and think the ones given are too pressuring and hard, get this. we do suggest however you give Tap Defense ago if you haven’t, it’s free and will give you more game for free. Otherwise we did enjoy Cartoon Wars, despite its flaws.
