It’s no surprise that we stumble upon indie games every now and then, it’s no surprise that it’s on 3 main computer OSes either, what’s strange though is that it’s on iPhone and iPad too, which struck us as strange as Caster is a fast paced 3rd person shooter.
So you play this nameless character (the game lets you decide whether the character is male or female), this character is a “caster”, there isn’t that much of a story, or at least I didn’t may much attention to it since it feels like it’s only there for the sake of a story, but I don’t think you will pay much attention to it anyway.
Game play is the main gist of the game, you’re given wide open areas to run around and collect orbs that you use later as currency to upgrade your character’s abilities and weapons. your character definitely does defy the laws of physics and gravity, as he can at really high speeds and jump pretty high, you’re given a good array of weapons (which you get through level progression), these weapons can also affect the elevation of the level, some dig holes in the ground while others elevate the ground to hills and mountains. Even for a 3rd person shooter, Caster is pretty fast paced, you will be running and jumping all over the place with ease (played on a PC) as the simple yet excellent controls will get you places. The game is a bit on the short side, but there are mods for improve on longevity.
One of the selling points of the game is having a “Pulse pounding soundtrack that will keep you wanting for more”, though I think many people won’t appreciate the heavy use of techno and trance in this game, I personally enjoyed it a lot, it’s definitely not a throw away score.
For a 5 dollar game, this is a fun time waster, if you’re looking for an inexpensive, fast-paced 3rd person shooter, this is the game.
What We Think: you know what this game reminds me of? Earth Defense Force, ok maybe it’s not a lot like it, but you do play a nearly indistructable hero that has a good array of weapons and is fighting giant bugs, I personally enjoyed the game a lot, it’s available on a ton of platforms so you wouldn’t have an excuse. Though I am curious about the game running on an iPhone or an iPad, we haven’t tried it yet, but from the way I played the PC game, I really doubt it’s going to run as well, the game definitely needs a mouse and keyboard. Other than that the game is good, solid fun, doesn’t need that much of hardware either.
Edit: giving the iPad version a try, the game looks like it’s running on a netbook, there’s a very low frame rate and the twin thumb controls do not aid the game’s extremely fast-paced gameplay, I suggest you get it on steam where it’s available on both PC and Mac (also available on the Mac app store).
