A game that I thoroughly enjoyed in the past was Canabalt, it was a simple game that involved around jumping over obstacles and avoid death. The developers have went beyond and made a more technical game known as Gravity Hook. Would Gravity Hook lose Canabalt’s charm and that “one more game” addictiveness for being a little more complex than tapping on the screen to jump?
Well, Gravity Hook still uses one finger to be played. Instead of jumping you shoot a hook to catch orbs in order to pull your playable character upwards. It’s not as simple as it sounds, your upward push and distance between you and the grabbed orb will decide if you can keep on going upwards. if you’re slowly pushed upwards, and/or grabbing a far away orb, you will fall and start over.
Physics isn’t the only obstacle, orbs come in different colors and attributes. Green are the safest, blue are mines that are activated when pulled and deactivate when left alone, red are mines that active whether or not you touched and gray are stones that will just drop (you along with it) when pulled. Gravity Hook will take some time to get used to, the first few times you’ll be slowly reaching the 200-300 meter range, and gradually you will be skipping them and reach the +700 meter range. The learning curve isn’t that difficult.
If you loved the music in Canabalt, you’ll be expecting the same quality in the music department as it’s the same composer and the music is really good. As you go higher the music changes so you’re not stuck with one track, it keeps changing. Music isn’t the onlything that is unlockable, you eventually unlock the “classic mode”. The classic mode is a harder, pixel art version, where all the orbs are blue and a chiptune soundtrack.
What We Think: Fun game for it’s price, quite excellent for short bursts and fairly long sessions. The game is available on both iPhone and iPad (as HD version).
