With the release of the Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo had decided to remake a few Nintendo 64 games for the 3DS. This somewhat annoyed me for giving me the impression that Nintendo is playing it safe as compared to how whimsical and quirky they went with the Nintendo DS, but who am I to demerit a good game?
While I think it’s lazy of Nintendo to remake Zelda Ocarina of time rather than make a new one, let alone a new game. That being said, there is a whole lot of game in one little package in Zelda Ocarina of Time 3D. You get the whole shebang that is Zelda: Ocarina of time, plus the Master Quest if you beat the initial game.
You play as Link, off to save Hyrule from Ganondorf with the help of Princess Zelda, the Ocarina of Time and the Master Sword. That is pretty much the story in a nut shell, I’d be crazy to say this but I will not spoil the story to those who never played it, which strikes as surprising as I know many who consider this to be the first Zelda they ever touch (the 3DS one, not the original N64 version). But Zelda never was a game series of a fully blown story, sure there is a charming little story in each game of the series, but nothing amazing.
You go on a quest to collect certain trinkets to obtain primary goal items, like the Master Sword for example. With the Master sword you are to collect even more trinkets and fight the final boss. Along the way, you obtain items that aid on your quest, these items will open new areas for you to look at and explore.
The world of Hyrule in this game was quite impressive for its vastness back in the day, and it is impressive to have it work as well on the 3DS. Having played the original, it’s nice to see what they did with the world with all the new textures. Most 3D models look the same with better textures and animations, but that’s about it in terms of remake work. Everything else remains the same.
My review maybe is a little vague, only because this is a game that EVERYBODY played, and EVERYBODY knows what expect from it and EVERYBODY is either going to get it out of blind nostalgia or buy it because of all the people that swear by this game and disregard every review out there including this one.
So why bothery writing about it? You may ask…
What We Think: Honestly, if every NEW portable Zelda that will be released on the 3DS is going to be like Zelda Ocarina of time 3D, and not the sloppy abominations that were Spirit Tracks and Phantom Hourglass, I am all for it. Seriously, the only reason why I got Ocarina of Time is because of the lack of games on the 3DS. I want to see new games rather than remakes of old games, and that is something difficult

I vaguely remember playing Zelda on my N64 when I was a kid. Thats why I think playing it on the 3DS will be more of a new experience rather than a nostalgic journey back in time for me ^_^
That being said.. do you think, since you play all these games, you could add a little thing in each review where you say how long it took you to finish the game. I remember one of the games magazines I picked up in Australia did this and I really liked it because it gave you the time to finish main story, time to finish all sidequests and the average playthrough time for all the people at the office that played it. If you could try to incorporate that into your articles that would be really cool (Y)
That is… if you actually get around to finishing all the games you review..

Spirit Tracks was NOT an abomination.

If I hated Phantom Hourglass, will I like Spirit Tracks?

That depends. If the controls were your problem, then I can’t say much. (other than the fact they made rolling easier)
Otherwise, ST is pretty much better in every way. Other than the fact the last item is situational like the Dominion Rod in TP, but at least it’s used often and has smart uses.

The thing I hated the most about Phantom Hourglass was that stupid temple that you kept going back to that had stealth. Also, the game felt like it had low production quality (can’t explain), and that’s another thing that I hated about the game
