Preview: Gears of War 3

Gears of War 3 is on the way, and we had 3 hours of gameplay of the full game, here’s what we think.

What are we talking about?

The third installment on Epic Games’ Xbox 360 flagship series.

Where did we try it out?

At Microsoft’s preview event in Park Hyatt Hotel.

What did we get to play?

3 whole hours of the full game, the Xboxes weren’t connected to each other so we didn’t have a chance to try out the multiplayer, the coop and the “Horde” mode.

As a person who is not a fan of the series (played until near the end of 1 and not touched the second, it was good to see a “story so far” cinematic to put the story to picture for people who haven’t been following the story to Gears of War. If anything that should be considered a big jump is definitely in the art direction, while the art style remains the same, the updated unreal engine really shines with amazing atmospheres that include very fancy lighting effects and surprisingly more colorful environments.

Gameplay is pretty much the same, take cover and shoot for the most part, chainsaw enemies with the chainsaw bayonet and so on. There are a few robot vehicles for you to use in certain segments in the game. The game is much more scripted than what I remember, there have been scenes where I was needed to extinguish fire, carry large crates. I have also encountered a gigantic boss within the first hour of the game, the series had a good sense of scale, but this is very early to expect stuff this big in the beginning of the game, judging it would have more of it .

So what do we think?

Fans of the series will be pleased with what is given here, it’s Gears of War only with even more refinements than before. I can’t exactly give a final judgement of the game since I specifically wanted to check out the coop and the horde mode, guess we’ll have to wait until we get our hands on a review copy, in the mean time, here are more pics of Gears of War 3

Check out the event we were invited to!
