From the same vein of JRPG silliness that is Breath of Death VII, we have Cthulhu Saves the World. Both games come in a bundle for $2.99, and the first game is easily worth the total asking price. But what about the second game?

You play as Cthulhu, who just awoke from his deep sleep in the ocean, and just as he woke up, some mysterious wizard took away all of Cthulhu’s powers. With his powers stolen away, Cthulhu is now powerless. The narrator said the only way for Cthulhu to regain his lost powers, he needs to do heroic acts. So Cthulhu overheard that, and did just that. Don’t expect some sort of a “deep” and “complex” storyline out of this. However, you will get a lot of laughs out of it, mostly from making fun at itself or being purely silly.

The overall gameplay is similar to Breath of Death VII, where it’s plays a lot like your regular Dragon Quest game, with a twist in the battle system where the enemy becomes stronger by 10% on each turn. This game also adds one more element in the battle system, where you can drive enemies insane (you ARE Cthulhu after all!). Driving enemies insane in general can give you buffs, makes enemies stronger/weaker, or even makes some enemies use a completely different set of abilities in battle.

Out of battles, you get the ability to teleport to any town you visited at any time, cutting down heavily on the time spent on backtracking. The game’s world is also a lot bigger than in the previous game and you also get to fly around the map later on in the game.

The game has a few stuff available for those who love to have multiple play-throughs in the games they buy, such as the Highlander mode, where you can only have one character in battles, or Cthulhu’s Angels mode, where you play the same game, but with completely different dialogue and story.

The graphics got a nice overhaul. Instead of looking like a NES game that got remade for the SNES with a low budget like in Breath of Death VII, it now looks like an actual SNES game, and looks far better than the previous game in my opinion.

The music is now a lot more consistent than in the previous game. Instead of using stock music, they now actually have a composer to make the music, who happens to be the same guy who made the battle theme in the previous game. Within the context of the game, the music is nice to hear, but I’m not sure if I’d ever try to get the game’s full sound track and listen to it everywhere.

What We Think: If you loved the first game, you’ll love this one as well, which makes total sense, considering both Breath of Death VII and Cthulhu Saves the World are part of a single bundle. Other than that, if you’re a big fan of turn-based RPGs or JRPGs in general, you cannot go wrong with this game bundle, especially considering how much fun you’ll be getting out of such a tiny investment.
